Tawe Delta Blues Club, Swansea, Wales

The John O’Leary Band

Long time under publicized Brit stalwart harp player John O’Leary (original c0-founder of Savoy Brown), member of John Dummer Blues Band, Sugarcane and more….) came to Wales for his first gig in the Principality.  His band was mostly new to each other but included David Hadley on bass, Malcolm Bruce( Jack’s son) on keyboards, Lol Sanford on guitar and Joachim Greve(from Germany) on drums.  For David, Malcolm and Joachim it was their first time (sic) together and for a time it showed, but like the true pros they are they soon found their groove and settled into it admirably.  It was evident that the band were having fun and it transferred to the audience the more the gig went on and the guys were not only talking barter but also playing barter with each other.  One of the early numbers was Snatch It Back & Hold It (played for a Savoy Brown fan in the audience. John’s playing was spot on and even though he had problems with his leads for a while.  David was a bundle of laughs before, during and after the show while Malcolm clearly enjoyed the company on his first gig with the band.

These guys are going to make a big name for themselves if they keep this up and you can be sure they will only get better. Following John’s excellent Chicago style first (solo) album in years, As Blue As I Can Be it was really good to see this man out and about outside the London scene. Performing such numbers as Hoochie Koochie, Let My baby Ride (loved that one), Help Me, Checking On My Baby, Pink Champagne, Five Long Years and Who’s Been Talking we were witness to a show that grew before our eyes and ears. A pre gig chat with John and then David and Malcolm confirmed that we were in for some entertainment, these guys were relaxed, enjoying themselves and we had a good laugh discussing things (we cannot report) musicians and otherwise. So if there is a chance to book these guys or go and see them, there’s only one thing to say, “…Go see them, you’ll be glad you did”!…..Caleb
