John uses a variety of microphones including a special harp mic by Dr. Ika and Shure SM57's and Shure Unidyne 545SD models. A custom volume control wired into the cable of the 545's. . The 545SD is a straight version of the type Paul Butterfield used. In addition John also has a Shure SM75 and a Shure 515 which have been beautifully customized complete each with a built in volume control by Simply Unique Kustom Mics (SUKM) in Detroit.
Amplifiers include a 1972 Fender Twin Reverb with Fender speakers, a Crate Vintage Club 50 and a rare Italian GEM Venus. On tour John is usually happy with a Fender Bassman. Fender Super Reverb, Fender Twin, Vox AC30 or a Selmer Thunderbird combo.
